Notes on Erg Chigaga, day four

Day four. The wind changed overnight and rebuilt the whole camp’s horizon. What we scouted on Tuesday is gone; the dunes have quietly moved a few metres east and taken our composition with them.

There is no arguing with sand. You wait for the hour when the light rakes low, you set up fast, and you accept that the desert has already decided what the picture will be.

Essay

On the long shot, and what waiting earns

The long shot asks something of everyone in the room: hold still, keep looking, let the thing arrive on its own time. It is the opposite of coverage. There is no safety in it, no second angle to cut to if the moment fails to land.

I have come to think of duration as a kind of honesty. When the camera refuses to move, it stops editorialising. It lets the light do the work, lets the wind decide the rhythm, lets a face fall out of its pose and into something truer.

What waiting earns, in the end, is trust — between the maker and the subject, and between the film and whoever sits with it later. You cannot fake patience in a frame. It shows.

CGI is not the opposite of photography

There is a lazy assumption that the rendered image and the photographed one sit on opposite ends of some moral scale — one honest, one invented. I have never found that line to hold.

A photograph is already a construction: a choice of lens, a decision about when to press, a crop, a print. CGI simply moves those decisions earlier, into the building of the thing itself. Both are ways of paying attention.

When I model a room that never existed, I am still asking the same questions I ask on location — where does the light come from, what does this surface remember, who was here before us.

Interview

Conversation with H. El Aoufi

H.E.A. — You keep returning to the same landscapes. Is that a discipline or a compulsion?

M.E. — Both, probably. A place doesn't give itself up in one visit. The first time you photograph the surface. It takes years before the place lets you photograph what is under it.

H.E.A. — And the desert specifically?

M.E. — The desert is patient in a way that reorganises you. You stop performing for it after a while. That's when the work starts.

Essay

Two cities, one passport

Amsterdam gives me structure — grey light, long edits, the quiet of a studio in winter. Marrakech gives me heat and interruption, the constant negotiation of the street.

I used to think I had to choose. Now I understand the practice lives in the commute between them: the way one city sharpens what the other blurs.
